My landlord listens to electronica, house, trance, and psychedelic sheitza while driving. :D The same kinda sheitza I listen to, Mihir listens to, Sou Sou listens to, Bhatia listens to (ook on long drives apparently he prefers rock), even JD listens to it sometimes. If you know these people, you will understand why their character profiles need to be cited. Some people in my office also call the music I listen to “horrible”. Some people have refused rides in my car in favor of a car without music. And that when I am playing relatively slow, harmless, electronica. Rajaram for mataji’s sake. But my self-proclaimed 18th century inhabitant landlord having a penchant for ti-rance.

This world never ceases to amaze me.

Easy Bhindi

27 07 2008

I love Bhindi. I also love it most when it is cooked in the typical high-calorie style: fried. My grandmom devised this recipe for my dad when he was battling cholestrol and it has bumped fried bhindi to the number 2 slot.

What you need:

  • Bhindi (okra) – 400 grams, diced into small pieces
  • Tomato – 1 large, diced into little pieces
  • Green chillies – 2, chopped as big as your bhindi pieces
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • That’s all really!!

What you need to do:

  1. Heat the oil in a nonstick kadhai.
  2. Throw in the bhindi and green chillies and stir on high flame till all the bhindi becomes coated with a sheen.
  3. Add the salt, tomato, and saute for a minute.
  4. Lower flame, cover and steam for 10 mins. Stir occasionally.

Best served with crisp hot phulkas.

Servings: 2

Banjare Murgh ka Salad

27 07 2008

After realizing how much of a difference pictures make, I was compelled to take pictures of any other concoctions I devise to put up on my blog.

So today I really felt like eating some succulent chicken. I can’t cook non-veg at home. Landlady’s request and restrictions. However, I can call for it. So I did. Banjara chicken kabab. Of course that couldn’t have been an entire meal. So I made a delicious salad out of it. How much oil did I use. None. Except whatever was there in the Chicken Banjara Kabab. I am sure it was lower than or equal to a teaspoon coz I only used two tikkas for this one.

What you need:

  • 3 boiled eggs, sliced into strips, minus the yolk of course
  • Lettuce, 4-5 leaves, cut or torn into bite size strips
  • Tomato – 1 huge, sliced into strips
  • Mint and coriander chutney – mint, green chilli, coriander, garlic, salt, ground
  • Curd – 1 tablespoon
  • Chicken tikka kabab – tandoori type, not the fried kind (I called for Chicken Banjara, hence the name of the salad – 2 tikkas – shredded or cut into strips
  • Oregano
  • Pepper (preferably from a pepper mill and not a shaker)
  • Salt

What you need to do:

  1. Whip 1 big spoon of chutney and curd together. Add as much chutney as you would like. Feel free to throw in some red chilli powder.
  2. Mix the lettuce, egg, tomato, chicken, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add the chutney curd mixture.
  4. Voila

Preparation time: 13 mins, if you don’t make the kababs of course

Serves: 1

Serve with toasted multi-grain or whole wheat bread. You can even make a sandwich out of this mixture.

How much I likes: *****

Ideal for dinner coz of low carb value.

Secret Angels and Love Affairs

25 07 2008

My office has this week long Secret Angel thingy going. The idea is you pull a chit and it contains the name of one person in the organization. You become that person’s secret angel. And then you have to do at least one thing every day to make that persn feel good.

While I haven’t been Sir Galahad or anything, my secret angel is definitely making me feel like I am having a love affair with a secret admirer. It started with her (it can’t be a him) getting a box of steamed idlis and salad for me. Thanks to Project Health, on the days I don’t get food from home, I bribe others to give me their home cooked lunch by buying them food instead. This was a very welcome thing. Second day also, I got sambaar and rice. Third day, I get custard made of no-cream milk and fruits in it. Pulao and raita. My dear secret angel has been cooking everyday and giving me Project Health compliant food.

And that’s not all – I keep getting flowers all day. Jasmine garlands that I string round my shaggy hair – apparently looking like a firang. Gladioli. Tiger lilies. An an Ikebana arrangement. A photocopy of a letter apparently written in blood.

It’s little things. But they make a whole world of a difference. We women ya know – our world revolves around these small things that men will never really ever realize. Do these small things and make your woman fall in love with you forever sez moi.

For now, I eagerly await tomorrow and what she will bring. :)

14 07 2008

on sundays in the afternoons between 3 and 4 pm, around the time when I was crossing the bridge between naievété and teenage, i would play the radio. because i didn’t have too many tapes having acquired a music system after much pleading. and because they played good music. like all radio stations who have had the same DJ for years, there would be repeats. the following song would repeat itself very often, and i thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie expressed on the (ir)radiant substance that can wreak annihilation on to us.

Tom Lehrer, he sang, “we will all go together when we go!” To quote the little speech he gives before he actually begins singing:

“I am reminded at this point of a fellow I used to know who’s name was Henry, only to give you an idea of what an individualist he was he spelt it HEN3RY. The 3 was silent, you see. Henry was financially independent having inherited his father’s tar-and-feather business and was therefore able to devote his full time to such intellectual pursuits as writing. I particularly remember a heart-warming novel of his about a young necropheliac who finally achieved his boy-hood ambition by becoming coroner.

The rest of you can look it up when you get home. In addition to writing he indulged in a good deal of philosophizing. Like so many contemporary philosophers he especially enjoyed giving helpful advice to people who were happier than he was. One particular bit of advice which I recall, which is the reason I bring up this whole, dreary story is something he said once before they took him away to the Massachussetts state home for the bewilderd. He said: “Life is like a sewer: what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.” It’s always seems to me that this is precisely the sort of dynamic, positive thinking that we so desperately need in these trying times of crisis and universal broo-ha-ha, and so with this in mind I have here a modern positive dynamic uplifting song in the tradition of the great old revival hymns. This one might more accurately be termed a survival hymn.”

My favorite lines in the song, are an interesting fusion of cuisine with satire.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We’ll be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom,
There’ll be a storm before the calm.

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There’ll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

I never forgot what rotisseries are after this song.

And yet another favorite song I found on the radioe was “A hole in the bucket“, which I now discover is a children’s song. Apparently, even Harry Belafonte covered this song. Sweet!

I wish some of the channels in loreland did something about the quality of music being played on the waves nowadays.
